Śiva Svarodaya

Pārvatī asks for the knowledge by which all knowledge is timed. Śiva answers with the science of the svara — the breath as it flows in the nostrils — the most intimate oracle a human being carries.

The scripture

The Śiva Svarodaya (also called Svarodaya Śāstra) is a tantric dialogue of about 395 verses in which Śiva teaches the Devī the udaya — the rising — of the svara, the breath-current. Its claim is simple and testable: the breath does not flow equally in both nostrils. It alternates in living cycles — now the left, now the right, sometimes both — and each configuration colours the mind, the body's strength, and the fitness of the moment for every kind of action. He who knows the svara, the text says, has the śāstra in his own nose: no almanac, no oracle is closer.

This scripture is the root of Swara Yoga, the science Swamiji teaches through the Swara Yoga Peeth, and the seed from which the Peeth's Nadi Tattva teaching system has grown.

The three nāḍīs — and the one breath

🌬 Swamiji's key teaching: the three nāḍīs are not only long alternating phases — every single breath visits all three. The in-breath is prāṇa rising through the receptive channel (Iḍā's nature); the out-breath is apāna releasing through the dynamic channel (Piṅgalā's nature); and the pause between them rests in Suṣumnā — the madhya bindu, the null point where the five tattvas fall silent and pure awareness alone remains. One breath is thus a complete journey through the whole map — which is why a single conscious breath can touch the centre.

The five tattvas in the breath

Within each svara the five elements rise in rotation — pṛthvī (earth), jala (water), agni (fire), vāyu (air) and ākāśa (space) — each with its own duration, direction of flow, subtle colour and taste, and each favouring its own class of actions: earth for stable work, water for nourishing and peaceful work, fire for forceful work, air for movement and change, space for meditation alone. Reading the tattva within the svara is the finer art of the science, and connects the breath directly to the 36-tattva cosmology — the last five rungs of the great tree, cycling in your own nostrils every hour of your life.

What the science governs

Practices for Everyone

1 · Reading Your Svara

the foundation · takes ten seconds, builds a lifetime's skill
  1. Close one nostril gently with a finger; breathe out through the other. Repeat on the other side. Which side flows freely? That is your active svara.
  2. Check on waking (before rising), at midday and at dusk. Note it — left, right, or both-equal.
  3. After two weeks the rhythm of your own cycles becomes visible: the alternation, its period, and the brief both-equal junctions.
Observation only — no control, no force. The science begins as pure listening.

2 · One Complete Breath

Swamiji's core teaching · the three nāḍīs in a single breath
  1. Sit quietly. Take one natural breath with full attention.
  2. As the breath enters — prāṇa — feel it as the receptive, cooling current: the Iḍā face of the breath.
  3. As it leaves — apāna — feel it as the releasing, warming current: the Piṅgalā face.
  4. In the pause before the next breath, rest in the still centre — Suṣumnā, the madhya bindu. No element calls; nothing is needed.
  5. Nine such breaths, morning and evening. The pause slowly reveals itself as the doorway home.
Never force the pause. It opens by attention, not retention.

3 · Acting with the Tide

applied svarodaya · the householder's practice
  1. Before any significant beginning — a difficult conversation, a journey, new work — take ten seconds to read your svara (Practice 1).
  2. Solar (right) flowing: favour the active, assertive, outward version of the task. Lunar (left): favour the receptive, patient, preparatory version.
  3. Both equal (Suṣumnā): pause worldly beginnings for a few minutes — and if you can, use that window to sit in stillness instead.
The full rule-corpus (directions, tattva timing, corrective techniques) is taught in the Peeth's courses and consultations.
